One in four girls and one in seven boys are sexually abused in childhood and many, many more are physically abused and neglected. Despite the stereotype of the stranger in a raincoat or the friendly man at the playground it is more likely a child will be abused by someone they know and trust.
What are the signs?
None of the following behaviors alone indicates abuse, however, a combination of these over a period of time may be a strong indication.
- A child's physical complaint - a "stomache ache"
- Fear or dislike of certain people or places
- Extreme changes in behavior
- Sleep disturbances and nightmares
- Depression and withdrawal
- Regression to infantile behaviors
- Age-inappropriate interest in sexual matters
- Excessive masturbation
- Frequent genital infections or irritation
- Difficulty with bowel movements, urinating or swallowing
In older children you may see such additional behaviors such as:
- Self-mutilation
- Eating disorders
- Suicide Attempts
- Sexually transmitted infections
- Sexually victimizing other children
- Discipline problems
- Running away
- Promiscuity
- Pregnancy
